Why This Guide Matters

Elder Financial Abuse Is the Fastest-Growing Category of Economic Crime in America

The estimates of annual losses range from $30 billion to more than $170 billion. The variance reflects how poorly the country measures this crime — not how small it is.

1.

Roughly 1 in 10 Americans over 60 is the victim of elder abuse in any given year.

2.

Between 54% and 90% of elder financial abuse is committed by family members or other trusted insiders — not by strangers.

3.

For every case reported to Adult Protective Services, an estimated 24 to 44 cases go unreported.

4.

Most victims show only mild cognitive impairment — and most have never been formally diagnosed.

5.

The legal system recovers funds in only a small fraction of cases — making prevention dramatically more important than litigation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is this guide free?

Because the information in it should be widely available. Elder financial abuse is preventable in most cases, but only when families know what to watch for. The full treatment of the subject — for attorneys, judges, and readers who want comprehensive coverage — is the subject of Mr. Rudy’s full-length book, available separately. This guide is the starting point.

  • Will I be added to a mailing list?

Yes — you’ll receive the guide immediately and then a short series of follow-up emails over the next few weeks with related material, plus a monthly newsletter thereafter. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe if you decide it isn’t useful.

  • Is this a substitute for legal advice?

No. The guide is educational, not legal advice. If you have a specific concern about an elderly family member, consult a qualified attorney in your jurisdiction. The guide will help you know when that consultation is worth having.
